The London Road Safety Council (LRSC) celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2017, with a special one-day conference and reception later this month to mark a century of road safety in the Capital.
The LRSC (at the time known as the London Accident Prevention Council) initiated the voluntary accident prevention movement in Great Britain in 1916. Since then, it has worked to reduce the number of casualties in London by producing and promoting resources and publicity materials, and providing a forum to discuss road safety issues.
The Council is unique in that its membership comprises both elected members and professional road safety officers from the London boroughs. Transport for London (TfL) and other stakeholders, including the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police forces, are also represented.
Over the last 100 years the LRSC has been responsible for a number of campaigns including the iconic post World War 2 ‘Keep Death off the Roads’ poster (left), which featured a widow in mourning. This campaign caused a considerable amount of controversy at the time with some road safety groups believing it to be too shocking for public display.
The one day centenary conference, ‘Safer Cities, Safer Futures’ is being held at the Guildhall in the City of London on 24 January 2017. Sponsored by RedSpeed International, the conference programme covers key road safety issues relating to London and other cities around the UK, including cycling, shared space schemes, motorcycling, 20mph limits and driverless cars.
The conference is supported by a plethora of road safety stakeholders including Road Safety GB, RoSPA, THINK!, PACTS, IAM RoadSmart, Road Safety Scotland, Road Safety Wales, Roadsafe and GEM Motoring Assist.
The agenda features 14 presentations from 17 professionals, including an opening keynote presentation by Leon Daniels, managing director of surface transport, Transport for London.
The agenda also includes presentations from a number of borough councillors and road safety officers, focussing on local issues and schemes – in particular lessons learnt from their development and delivery.
The delegate fee is £95 for attendees from local authorities, academia and the third sector, and £145 for other attendees (both prices plus VAT). The fee includes a drinks and canapes reception which will follow the conference and will feature an address by James Cracknell OBE, LRSC president.
