The London Road Safety Council (LRSC) has made two awards to members for distinguished service to road safety.
Chris King and Liz Knight have between them clocked up 60 years’ road safety service in London, and both are well known across the UK for their national contribution.
Liz left Hounslow Council earlier this year after 25 years’ service while Chris, who has more than 35 years’ service to his credit, continues to work at Bexley Council.
Chris King is currently school crossing patrol supervisor for the London Borough of Bexley following retirement in 2008 from the post of road safety manager at the London Borough of Richmond. His has worked in several other London Boroughs since entering the profession in the late 1970s, including Newham, Southwark, and Kensington and Chelsea.
Chris has been involved with the LRSC for many years and is currently a vice president. He is also a past chairman of the RoSPA National Road Safety Committee and past vice-chairman of ALBRSO (Now Road Safety GB London region).
Elisabeth Knight was with Hounslow Council’s road safety team for 25 years and has been involved nationally with both ROSPA and PACTS. She was also part of a team working with DfT and RoSPA to devise the online ‘Evalu-it’ programme for evaluating road safety projects.
In Elisabeth’s early career she had big success championing the Junior Road Safety Officers Scheme in schools across Hounslow.
Much deserved recognition of two outstanding officers who have contributed so much to the road safety profession. The worry is that road safety is currently losing far too many experienced and dedicated individuals like these due to financial restraints. The number of local authorities that now have little or no road safety output is very worrying and a truly sad reflection on my profession.
