Drink drive campaign reinforces ‘morning after’ message

24 road safety teams from across England are participating in a ‘morning after’ campaign that aligns with ACPO’s drink drive message for the 2012 festive period.

ACPO’s enforcement campaign is targetting well-intentioned drivers who do not think they are breaking the law but may be over the legal limit when they get into their car the morning after drinking.

Launching the campaign, DCC Davenport, ACPO lead on roads policing, said: “Some drivers think they are obeying the law but are in fact breaking it by getting into their cars the morning after a night of drinking. People may be surprised to hear that last year between the hours of 6am and 11am more than 400 people failed breath tests (or refused to provide a specimen), which is more than those caught for the hour before or after midnight."

The ‘morning after’ campaign, developed by Stennik the specialist road safety publicity consultancy, has been running for several years to help people make an informed decision about driving the night after heavy drinking.

David Frost, road safety consultant with Stennik, said: “The campaign explains that it takes much longer than most people think for alcohol to pass through the body, and that because of this it is very likely that many people unwittingly drive while still over the drink drive limit the morning after heavy drinking.

“Our campaign is designed to raise awareness of just how long it takes for alcohol to pass through the body, and to help normally responsible people avoid a drink drive conviction – or much worse causing a crash and casualties.”

The campaign website is backed by Facebook and Twitter feeds which will be updated on a daily basis throughout December.

The road safety teams that are participating in the 2012 morning after festive campaign are: Bradford, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Havering, Knowsley, Lewisham, Middlsbrough, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Oxfordshire, Peterborough, Redcar & Cleveland, Southend, South Tyneside, St Helens, Stockton, Sunderland, Swindon, Thurrock and Wokingham.
