Hi-viz umbrella designed to improve children’s visibility

A new hi-viz product, the Child-Safe umbrella, has been launched to make it easier for road users to see children when they are out in dark mornings or winter afternoons.

The design comprises three reflective stripes around a fluorescent yellow canopy, along with a bright yellow umbrella sleeve with reflector stripes and shoulder straps so children can wear the umbrella on their back when it is not being used.

The umbrella uses a ‘child-safe’ mechanism for easy opening and closing which avoids the chance of trapping fingers. The spoke ends and canopy tip are rounded to help make an umbrella that’s safe for children. It also has a useful ‘write-on’ name tag attached to the handle.

Deb Lindsay, sales manager at Buggy Brolly, said: “There’s nothing we care about more than our children. Sadly they are one of the most vulnerable groups when it comes to road safety. Young children in particular seldom have the skills or judgement to cope with today’s traffic.

“Children love these umbrellas. They can sling them over their shoulder or wear it like a ruck-sack when it’s not raining. Parents love these hi-viz umbrellas because they know their child will be easier to see in the dark.”

Kids like things that illuminate so why not push the armbands and other accessories that show coloured lights on one’s attire? The eye is drawn from the dark to things that are light and also things that move. You no longer have to rely on a driver’s full or dipped headlights (side light being useless) or other indiscriminate lighting.

An illuminating bib wouldn’t be a bad thing and with modern light bulbs not too expensive either. Can be used in light and dark circumstances and in good or inclement weather.

Without appearing negative, I think this is a good idea but they do need a good light source pointed directly at them or at least within 7 deg of them for them to illuminate properly.

If it’s a bad dark rainy morning or pre-tea time in winter with street lighting on and other miscellaneous lighting from other vehicles and shop windows etc., then they may not be as valuable as first thought.
