The first pub located on a motorway services opened yesterday at the Extra services on junction two of the M40, near Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.
The pub and restaurant, the Hope and Champion, is operated by JD Wetherspoons. It will be open from 4.00am to 1.00am seven days a week and will serve alcohol from 9.00am.
Quoted in a BBC News report, Brake said the pub was “putting temptation in front of drivers”.
The RAC described it as a “risky and unnecessary move” and stated that in a survey it conducted only 12% of respondents were in favour of pubs at motorway services.
While I think Wetherspoons give good value, I do not think a Motorway Service Station is a sensible option. How they got planning permission for this, beats me. Let’s hope it is the first and last.
