Go Safe Glasgow is targeting fleet operators, bus companies and taxi operators to encourage their employees to sit a new online training course which has been developed to improve the safety of the city’s cyclists.
Launched last month (Oct 2014), Cycle Aware is an interactive education suite designed to increase awareness among both drivers and cyclists of how collisions occur, and how to avoid them by sharing roads responsibly.
Cycle Aware comprises more than 200 narrated film clips, accompanied by 100 multiple-choice questions aimed at five different types of road users. People can choose the role of cyclist or car, taxi, bus or lorry driver, and then take the 30-minute interactive course.
Police Scotland road policing officers and members of the Cycle Touring Club identified the scenarios used in Cycle Aware. The filming took place in a live environment and shows a series of manoeuvres undertaken by heavy goods, taxi and bus drivers.
Frank McAveety, convener of Glasgow City Council’s environment committee, said: "It’s important cyclists and other road users have a clear understanding of their responsibilities on the road and how they respond to the actions of others. It is hoped by highlighting and demonstrating how accidents occur, we can promote a safer shared road space.”
