Police ‘name and shame’ drink/drug drivers

48 drivers, almost half of whom are in their twenties, have been ‘named and shamed’ as part of a drink and drug drive campaign by Avon and Somerset Police.

Under Operation Tonic the force is naming publicly every motorist who is charged with a drink or drug driving offence.

Of those arrested, virtually half (23 out of 48) are aged 20-29yrs. 14 are aged 30-39yrs, with four aged 40-49yrs, six aged over 50yrs and just one driver aged under 20yrs. Looking at the forenames of those arrested, it would appear that just one of the 48 is female.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign, road safety superintendent Richard Corrigan said: “We are determined to do whatever we can to stop people driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

“For the first time in our Christmas 2014 campaign we decided to name those charged. The results showed that this measure acted as a clear deterrent to people taking a chance on driving while under the influence.”

Police and crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens added: “I believe the majority of law-abiding people support the police in doing all we can to bring offenders to justice, keeping the roads safe not only this summer, but all year round.”
