Greg Mulholland has been named Parliamentarian of the Month by the road safety charity Brake and Direct Line Group.

The Lib Dem MP for Leeds North West has been recognised for his ‘tireless’ work fighting for improved justice for victims of criminal driving.

On 12 January, Mr Mulholland successfully introduced the Criminal Driving (Justice for Victims) Bill to the House of Commons. The Bill will have a second reading on 11 March.

As well as seeking to strengthen penalties for criminal driving offences that lead to serious injury or death, the Bill looks to redefine criminal driving offences, amend bail conditions for those charged, and enhance standards of investigation by the police and in the Courts.

It also calls for improved standards of treatment for victims of criminal driving offences and their families within the justice system.

Greg Mulholland said: “I’m very pleased to have been awarded Brake’s Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month.

“I want to pay tribute to the campaigning of families who have lost loved ones due to criminal driving; I want to keep campaigning for better justice for victims of criminal drivers and do all I can to ensure government takes up the measures in my Criminal Driving Bill.”

Gary Rae, Brake’s director of communications and campaigns, said: “From our work with hundreds of bereaved families whose lives have been torn apart by criminal drivers we know something that makes their loss even harder to bear is a lack of justice.

“Greg Mulholland’s tireless campaigning for more robust investigations, stronger charges and tougher sentences is giving hope to these families.

“As well as pushing for stronger deterrents against criminal driving in the first place, he is keeping the needs of victims and their loved ones absolutely at the heart of criminal driving laws, which is exactly as it should be.”
