Liz Brooker among road safety professionals recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Liz Brooker, Road Safety GB London Region’s press and communications officer, has seen her services to road safety rewarded with a MBE in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Liz, who previously held the position of national press and PR officer for Road Safety GB, has been involved in road safety within the London Borough of Lewisham for more than three decades.

She currently manages the road safety, sustainable transport & travel co-ordination service, including delivering the Bikeability cycle training programme and the the Council’s SCP service.

Liz also has responsibility for road safety campaigns and initiatives, encouraging smarter travel choices and school and work place travel plans.

Earlier in her career, Liz represented LEPT (London European Partnership of Transport) on the Eurocities Mobility Forum, as chair of the Road Safety Working Group.

Liz Brooker said: "I am totally overwhelmed and so happy.  

"I have loved working in road safety and never thought that when I stared in the early 80s it would lead to such an amazing award! I still love what I do and feel privileged to work with such amazingly professional and dedicated friends and colleagues."

Honor Byford, chair of Road Safety GB, said: “Liz has been an enthusiastic and committed road safety practitioner for more years than she will want me to remember. Her influence and achievements within London and nationally through Road Safety GB has been invaluable.

“I am delighted to see Liz’s professionalism and dedication recognised with this award. Well done Liz and thank you.”

Robert Carlson, former road safety manager for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, has also been awarded an OBE in the 2016 Honours.

He joined Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue in 1983 and headed up road safety and casualty reduction for the service until he retired earlier this year.

Along with Sergeant Olly Tayler (who received the Queen’s Police Medal in the 2015 New Year’s Honours), Rob Carlson played a key role in establishing the Honest Truth Partnership, which is now used by a significant number of road safety teams and partnership across the UK.

Also recognised with an OBE, for services to Typography and Road Safety, is Margaret Calvert, who helped design the signage system for the UK road network in the 1950s.

Calvert’s design work inspired the Hampshire Road Safety partners’ development of Project Pictogram. The national initiative uses a set of pictograms to provide daily on-road reminders of the ‘Fatal Four’ driver behaviours which are contributing factors in almost all killed or serious injury collisions.
