The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership is asking fellow road safety practitioners to share a video which aims to reduce the number of collisions involving cyclists.
The video, ‘Share the Road’, calls on road users to view the road through different perspectives, not just their own. ‘Share the road’ has been used by a number of road safety teams and partnerships across the country as a theme for various road safety campaigns and initiatives.
Presented by television personality Jason Bradbury, the video features interviews from Lincolnshire Police, Sustrans and the East Midlands Ambulance Service. It also provides practical tips on how to keep cyclists safe on the roads.
Mr Bradbury says that cyclists and motorists both have equal rights to be on the road, asking ‘why don’t we just get along a little more and operate with a bit more respect?’.
In the film, chief constable Neil Rhodes of Lincolnshire Police calls on motorists to show patience and be prepared to travel behind a cyclist, at their pace, until it is safe to pass. He also calls on cyclists to do their bit and to be seen on the road.
Clair Compton, from the East Midlands Ambulance Service, says motorists and cyclists should give a clear indication of their actions, especially at roundabouts and junctions, to prevent collisions.
The video, which has over 1,700 views on YouTube, is also supported by North Kesteven District Council.
Mike Lock, the council’s leisure and culture services manager, said: “We’ve been pleased to support (this) film as it carries a really important message.
“It’s not aimed at pointing the finger at anyone, but showing that all road users have a right to be there and need to be aware of each other so that accidents don’t happen.”
This is a fudge. Infrastructure is what is needed, not dangerous platitudes.
Would you let your five year old ride to school along some of those roads hoping that the lorry driver or motorist has seen a ‘share the road’ video? Of course not. Separate cycle infra is desperately needed in this country so that we can give more people a safer alternative to the car, and thus freeing up traffic speed for those in cars where cycling is not an option.

I found the transitions between scenes to be annoying, but otherwise the video does a good job of highlighting a concept that we would do well to embrace in this country. It is not just cyclists and motorists who need to share the road; let’s get riders of PTWs and horses, and pedestrians to join in as well.
