The 2014 National Motorcycle Safety Seminar will provide an opportunity for road safety professionals to share best practice and improve strategies to improve the safety of riders.
The one-day event is free to attend and will take place on Saturday 16 August in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. It is being organised by Tony Smith, road safety coordinator for Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service.
Confirmed speakers include: Jim Sanderson, from Kent Fire & Rescue Service who founded the Biker Down initiative; Matt Staton, Cambridgeshire’s lead road safety officer who will present the TWIST bikers’ campaign; and Kevin Williams, an advanced motorcycling instructor who will talk about ‘the psychology of motorcyclists’.
Tony Smith said: “The seminar will bring together fire bike teams and other road safety professionals to share knowledge and experience in carrying out initiatives to reduce the number of motorcycle related KSIs.
“We have a number of very interesting speakers booked and have allowed plenty of time for sharing our various initiatives, Q&A sessions and general networking.”
The seminar will be held at Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service’s Training & Development Centre in Stevenage. There are 100 places available which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Attendees are also invited to attend a Bikefest event to be held at the same venue the following day, Sunday 17 August. The organisers will source discounted accommodation for those who wish to stay over and attend both events

I afraid the AIRSO conference is seen as just a back patting club. Having been before it certainly needs competition to improve the standard.

There is room for both conferences, the speakers and items will probably be different. Even if some are the same that’s not a bad thing, not everyone will be able to get to both. More exposure for motorcycling matters and opportunities to share best practice are always welcome. It would have been better if they had been a bit more time between them though, I can’t get to either.

I am disappointed to find the fire service doing this when AIRSO organise the Annual National Motorcycle Conference supported by a number of organisations within the motorcycling world on 28th August 2014 at Hinckley Island Hotel.
