Northern Ireland considers Operation SNAP

The Government in Northern Ireland is considering introducing Operation SNAP as an additional means for road traffic law enforcement.

Operation SNAP, currently operated by a number of police forces across England and Wales, enables members of the public to submit dash cam footage showing careless driving or riding. The footage is then reviewed by police officers.

Its potential introduction in Northern Ireland was put out for public consultation in November – along with a move to make careless driving a fixed penalty notice offence.

Statistics show that 42% of all court cases in Northern Ireland are motoring offences, including careless driving.

The introduction of Operation SNAP is designed to reduce the number of minor motoring offences coming before the courts.

Nichola Mallon, Northern Ireland’s minister for infrastructure, said: “Part of my responsibility is promoting and improving road safety. This is a responsibility I take very seriously.

“I have made it clear that I take a zero tolerance approach to irresponsible behaviour on the roads and I am committed to working with partners to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries across our roads network.”
