A new mobile phone app has been launched ahead of the Tour de France Grand Départ from Yorkshire in July 2014.

The app, Cycle Yorkshire Ride The Routes, includes information on the routes, hints and tips on how to cycle specific sections, and safety advice about cycling in rural areas.

The app has been created as part of a regional safer cycling project by a team comprising representatives from road safety partnerships from across the Yorkshire & Humber region.

The information is presented in a combination of short video clips and text for areas where mobile signal is limited. The film clips show semi-pro rider Jamie Sharp cycling each section, with local radio presenter Jonathan Cowap providing the voice over.

Kathryn Mackay, road safety project officer at City of York Council, said: “The app is aimed at all cyclists and groups who are coming to Yorkshire to ride the Grand Départ routes, like their professional heroes.

“We launched the app at Welcome to Yorkshire’s Y14 event last week and the interest and positive feedback has been phenomenal.”

Ruth Gore, from Safer Road Humber, said: “It truly is a partnership arrangement with many people from across the Yorkshire and Humber authorities playing their part, using their specific skills to make a holistic successful group of campaigns that none of us could have done without each other.

“We have been very successful as a regional group, gaining a number of national awards for our partnership work, and the app follows the Urban Cycling Guide that was completed last year.”

The app is available to download on smart phones at: bit.ly/cycleyorkshire

Great news – we’ve had over 500 downloads of the Cycle Yorkshire app in the first few days. The advice is generic enough for any adult rural cyclist, so please feel free to use it in your cycling projects. Just search for Cycle Yorkshire on iStore or Google Play.
