The Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership has published the latest edition of its free safety magazine for motorcyclists.
Free copies of Ride Smart are available from motorcycle retailers across Derbyshire as well as pubs and cafes that are popular with riders. It is also available online via the partnership’s website.
Andy Adlington, the partnership’s motorcycle safety officer, said: We want to help everyone who rides in the Derbyshire countryside to become a better biker. That’s why Ride Smart is packed full of great advice about keeping safe while enjoying the freedom of the road.
“Readers can also learn about all the great training discounts we offer to bikers wishing to upgrade their skills. We’ve got something for everyone from complete beginners to those with many years of experience.”
Throughout the leisure biking season, Derbyshire police will be running an operation designed to prevent countryside crashes involving motorcyclists.
Operation Safe Ride launched on 3 April and will run on weekends and selected evenings until September. During that time, marked and unmarked vehicles will be used to carry out speed detection and patrols on routes with high casualty figures.
PC Adam Titterton, from Derbyshire Constabulary, said: “Bikers from across the country love to visit but they are often unaware of the challenges presented by the landscape. We don’t want to put people off visiting but we do want them to do so safely so they can return year after year.
“We will focus on the small number of riders who create the greatest risk.”
It’s one thing offering discounted instruction to local Derbyshire lads, but it’s the visitors in the main that cause the problem and will they be able to avail themselves of cheaper tuition?
I have read most of the mag but I have criticised the accident maps for motorcyclists. For one they don’t give direction of travel re incidents and anyone knows that one way a road can be dangerous and have quite a number of accidents but the other way may appear safer and have much fewer.
Also the legend marking the location of accidents in colour and shape are ok but give no actual information indication of what transpired, ie right bend, left bend, overtake, T junction and crossroads. They are all important and could have be done very simply with some foresight.
