The latest confirmed presentation for Young Driver Focus 2015 will explore how road safety interventions for pre- and novice drivers can be improved by designing in behavioural change techniques.

The presentation will be delivered by Dr Fiona Fylan from Leeds Beckett University and emeritus Professor Stephen Stradling, Edinburgh Napier University.

The Young Driver Focus 2015* conference will be held in London on 15 April. More than 140 people have already registered to attend and with just a handful of places remaining, anyone wishing to attend is being encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Fiona Fylan is a health psychologist who specialises in driver behaviour, specifically in understanding why people drive the way they do, the way in which they think about driving, and how to change the decisions they make when driving in order to increase safe and responsible driver behaviour. She is a Reader in Psychology at Leeds Beckett University.

Stephen Stradling was professor of transport psychology in the Transport Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University where he conducted research on road user attitudes and behaviours (which car drivers and PTW users are the ‘crash magnets’?) and on modal shift and car dependence (why are we so attached to our cars?). He is now a professor emeritus and working as an independent consultant in traffic and transport psychology, based in Greater Manchester.

Dr Fylan and Professor Stradling co-authored a paper which defines a series of behavioural change techniques (BCTs) that can be applied in the road safety setting, and identifies which ones are found in road safety interventions for young road users. The study found that only a small subset of BCTs are employed in most young driver interventions.

This presentation will give recommendations for improving the effectiveness of road safety interventions for young people including young, novice drivers by increasing the range of BCTs deployed.

Sounds to me like a good do, but unfortunately I don’t have the resources to warrant being there.

I do hope that we will hear more about it and perhaps have a paper made available after the event. Please can it be followed up.
