Looking ahead to National Safe Speed day
Tomorrow is National Safe Speed day, which aims to highlight the risks of driving above the speed limit.

The day is also an opportunity to encourage drivers and riders to reflect on the speeds they choose and if necessary to change their minds, slow down and help reduce risk.

The first of the road trips will arrive in London, where the Metropolitan Police will be promoting two speed awareness and enforcement activities. The first is aimed at reducing risk for vulnerable road users while the second targets drivers of commercial vehicles.

The second road trip will be visiting South Wales Police to discuss the success of the 20mph zones implemented by the Welsh Government. Contributions will come from senior police and council officials and include a look at the national dashcam safety portal.

Roads policing, neighbourhood and mounted officers take to the roads of South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire Police will have horses on the road, plain clothed officers out on their bikes, and proactive patrols across the region, to demonstrate their dedication and commitment to creating safer roads.

Matt Duffy, roads policing sergeant, said: “Creating safer roads is one of our core policing efforts.

“As part of our operations this week, we will be carrying out safe pass operations, ensuring drivers know how to correctly pass horses and cyclists and attending schools to talk to pupils, in addition to policing the road network.

“It’s important to note that we do not only target drivers and we will stop, educate and enforce against all road users as each and every one can help create safer roads.”

Chief inspector Jon Chapman, of the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk RAPT, said: “Project EDWARD has the noble ambition of eradicating road deaths entirely, which is something we can all support.

“As is Safer Speeds Day – which aims in that 24-hour period to focus peoples’ minds on what they should do every day: keep to the speed limits and help ensure we don’t have any fatalities on our roads.”
