There is still time to register for the first running of Road Safety GB Academy’s new one-day Practitioner Foundation Refresher Course, taking place on 16 July 2026.

Designed for anyone who completed their initial Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course more than three years ago, the refresher course provides an opportunity to explore the latest developments in the road safety profession and ensure knowledge remains current in a rapidly evolving field.

Over recent years, the road safety landscape has undergone significant change, including the introduction of a new Department for Transport Road Safety Strategy, increased adoption of the Safe System approach, and emerging challenges associated with technological advances and an ageing population.

Delivered by the Road Safety GB Academy either in person, subject to numbers, or online, the course will review key developments and cover a range of important topics, including:

  • The Department for Transport Road Safety Strategy
  • The Safe System approach
  • The importance of data in road safety
  • Lifelong learning and professional development
  • Behavioural models
  • Education theory

The refresher course has also been designed to support practitioners working towards the new Road Safety GB professional awards.

Under the new awards framework, candidates will be required to have completed a Foundation Course within the previous five years or have attended a refresher course. While the course is suitable for all practitioners seeking an update, it is particularly recommended for those who completed their Foundation Course more than three years ago.

Rhian Hughes, director of the Road Safety GB Academy, said: “There are a number of changes shaping how we as practitioners approach road safety, with clearer national targets, new technologies and changing patterns in how our roads are used, all set against the backdrop of the Safe System approach.

“This refresher course gives experienced practitioners the chance to revisit the core principles alongside other professionals, understand what has changed in recent years and refresh their confidence in delivering impactful schemes and initiatives.

“This marks the beginning of a series of changes to support our members in meeting central government targets for casualty reduction.”

The inaugural Road Safety GB Foundation Refresher Course will take place on 16 July 2026. For more information and to book a place, visit the Road Safety GB Academy website.
