Safety of older drivers on the Festival agenda

Two presentations being delivered as part of the Festival of Road Safety will look at some of the key issues relating to older drivers and their safety.

The Festival of Road Safety, organised by Road Safety GB and sponsored by Jenoptik, will run online from 1-26 November.

All the content will be aired free to view by all – and will comprise a mix of around 40 pre-recorded and live presentations, workshops, podcasts and live discussion sessions.

The programme page on the Festival website has details of more than 20 confirmed sessions, with an outline of the agenda currently under development and set for publication next week.

Among the latest presentations to be confirmed are two looking at older drivers – the first of which is being delivered by Rebecca Ashton and Neil Greig from IAM RoadSmart.

The presentation will make the case for an education campaign to help drivers plan for retirement from driving at an earlier age, and will call for the Government to consider offering ‘mature driver reviews’ on prescription to encourage uptake and ensure equal access.

It follows new research from the road safety charity, which reveals that motorists over the age of 60 years intend to drive for as long as they are safe to do so.

The second is being delivered by Sam Chapman (The Floow) and will look at the use of new technologies for older driver safety assessments.

Accurately determining whether a person is still able to drive safely is of increasing importance, due to the UK’s ageing population.

However, at present, driver assessment processes remain costly and do not judge day-to-day driving – according to Sam.

His talk will detail current UK trials of new technologies designed to automate driver monitoring and then discuss how these tools can aid older drivers, assessors, clinicians, careers and family members.
