Safety week focus switches to driving for work

Today (27 March) the focus of RoSPA’s Family Safety Week switches to adults and creating safer drivers at work.

Advice is available on the Family Safety Week (24-28 March) website and each day during the week has a different theme.

The Family Safety Week website says that up to a third of collisions involve someone who is using the roads for work purposes. RoSPA says that this means that in 2012 “up to 7,679 people” could have been killed or seriously injured as a result of a work-related collision.

Kevin Clinton, RoSPA’’s head of road safety, said: "Managing occupational road risk is all about having a good system in place, but it doesn’t have to be a tedious, tick-box exercise.

"Employers can make a real difference to the safety of their employees who drive for work by addressing this issue through risk assessment, training and other actions like journey planning, schedule setting, vehicle choice and maintenance and learning from accidents, should any occur.”

Each day during Family Safety Week, RoSPA is asking people to make a different pledge. Today’s pledge is: “I pledge to find out what I can do to keep myself, or my employees, safer while driving for work.”

RoSPA has a range of free resources available to help firms manage occupational road risk. Its Driver and Fleet Solutions team also offers services including policy reviews, risk assessment and driver training.

Family Safety Week
RoSPA has launched Family Safety Week in a bid to help people protect their loved ones from accidents which it describes as “the top cause of preventable death”. The week was launched by Martin Roberts, the star of BBC1’s Homes Under the Hammer, in Birmingham on 24 March.
