Scotland gets tougher with drink-drivers

10.24 | 18 December 2009 |

The 2009 festive drink/drug-drive campaign north of the border is delivering the message that Scotland has got tougher on drink driving.

Enforcement will continue as normal but this year, a new initiative will see drivers caught drink driving for a second time having their vehicle taken away by authorities using their powers to seize and forfeit vehicles. The campaign message is: ‘Drink driving. Don’t risk it’.

The tougher approach is led by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) and supported by the Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland.

The partners point to figures showing that more than 650 people were charged during last year’s festive campaign, and approximately one in nine deaths on Scottish roads involves drivers who are over the legal limit.
