Brake and Road Safety GB are seeking to recognise a road safety team who has delivered an innovative approach to a local challenge which has resulted in a measurable safety or active travel improvement.

The Local Roads Innovation Award is being presented by Brake as part of its inaugural Vision Zero Awards, the winners of which are due to be announced during Road Safety Week 2020 (16-22 November).

To be considered for the award, schemes need to have been implemented within the past two years.

Entries are now being welcomed from local authority road safety teams – and must be submitted before the deadline on Friday 28 August.

Submission questions include:

  • What was the goal of the project (e.g. what issue did it seek to address, what was the scale of the issue)? (max 300 words)
  • What was the solution that was identified and implemented? (max 300 words)
  • What was innovative about the project? (no max word length)
  • How did the project seek to support active travel? (max 300 words)
  • How were the local community engaged in the project? (max 300 words)
  • How was/is the project being monitored and evaluated? (max 300 words)
  • Supportive data/information on success of project (files are able to be attached and submitted)

In line with the name of the award, the primary judging criteria, alongside the actual improvement that has been delivered, is the innovative nature of the scheme.

This innovation may be in relation to the whole project, one aspect of the project, or how the project was delivered (e.g. an innovative approach to partnership working).

Road Safety GB will be represented on the judging panel and may also disseminate submissions online as examples of good practice for other authorities – although submitting teams can opt-out of this.

If you require further information, please contact Brake via email, using the subject line ‘Local roads innovation award query’.

Is there any further information out there about the awards as a whole and the other categories?
