An 11-year-old pupil from west London has been honoured by the London Road Safety Council (LRSC) for his contribution to improving road safety in his local community.

Aaryaman Walia, from Hounslow, won the LRSC’s ‘Sunshine Award’ for devising and running scooter training courses for younger students, as well as playing a key role in educating parents about the dangers of school-gate parking.

Aaryaman, who has been a Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) at Isleworth Town Primary School for two years, continued to support the scheme despite breaking his leg.

The Sunshine Award has been established as a memorial award for Angela Smith, the former Tower Hamlets RSO who passed away in December. Angela was a great supporter of young people and was renowned for her commitment to the JRSO scheme and the Children’s Traffic Club.

Her husband designed and presented The Sunshine Award. Members of Angela’s family attended the prize giving and agreed that The Sunshine Award is a fitting honour to be made in her memory.
