An 11-year-old pupil from west London has been honoured for her contribution to improving road safety in her local community.
Maya Mortesen-Ramill, from East Sheen near Richmond, won the London Road Safety Council’s (LRSC) Sunshine Award and was presented with the trophy at City Hall.
Maya, a Junior Road Safety Officer at East Sheen Primary School for the past year, impressed judges for her enthusiasm, drive and enterprise in making fellow students safer on the roads.
Maya has raised awareness of safety when walking or cycling to school through Powerpoint presentations and competitions to encourage pupils to create safety songs and poems.
She has also raised funds to pay for reflective bands for pupils; persuaded her teacher to set a homework task asking children to route plan their journey to school; and prepared a guidebook to help next year’s JRSOs.
The Sunshine Award has been established as a tribute to Angela Smith, a former Tower Hamlets RSO who tragically died in January 2012. Angela was a great supporter of young people and renowned for her commitment to the JRSO scheme and the Children’s Traffic Club. Her husband designed and presented The Sunshine Award.
