Three out of every four of people who do the school run have witnessed aggressive behaviour by parents as they look for a parking spot, according to a new survey by Allianz Your Cover.
In the survey of 1,000 people who do the school run regularly, 39% of respondents said they had witnessed or know about accidents involving parents’ vehicles outside the school gates; and 79% of respondents said they would support 20mph speed limits around schools, with quarter of a mile radius being the most favoured distance.
While 70% of respondents said they felt their child is safe during the school run, almost a fifth (19%) worry about their child going to and from school on their own during the dark winter months. Allianz Your Cover says that because of this, walking to school becomes a less popular option for parents during winter.
Allianz Your Cover says that the average British school run is 7.6 miles and that more than half (56%) of children are driven to school as parents consider this to be the safest option.
Jon Lott, of Allianz Your Cover Insurance, said: “We support calls for increased safety around schools. Getting children to school safely is of the upmost importance and often the competition for parking spaces, busy parents and the need to be on time can distract from this.”
20mph around schools, why would you want this when schools are shut? Is it so dangerous to drive at 30mph at 2.00am in the morning or school holidays? As the article suggests most accidents occur in very low speed manoeuvring because of the congestion around school gates. Because councils now wish to follow Rod King’s policies they will not provide pick-up points for those using cars. Most people ignore the 30 mph limit, so stating people want 20mph is just a non starter. It is the same old story, they might want it down their road, but once out on a journey, not so keen.

I have seen drivers stop and park on the approach to pedestrian crossings letting their children off. I have seen them stop actually on junctions preventing others from making progress. I have seen them stop on the marked zig zags outside schools. I have seen them double parked like taxi drivers. I have seen them pull into school gates, stop, let off their kids and reverse out onto the main road. I have seen them park on the pavements where there are double yellow lines.
Why is it that parents who would otherwise be lawful citizens, and act with commonsense, seem to lose it all when on the school run?

It would be interesting to have heard the views of the parents of the 44% of children who walk or cycle to school. I suspect they would have a very different view on whether the increased safety should be “just around schools” or whether the 20mph limits should only apply only to a quarter of a mile radius.
