Sustrans, the sustainable transport group, is claiming success with DIY Streets, a cost effective alternative to the home zone scheme (Surveyor, 12 March).
The DIY Streets project aims to redesign areas around a similar concept to home zones, but at a fraction of the cost, and with community involvement. Most schemes cost less than £100,000 compared with £1m for a home zone.
Sustrans has run five pilot DIY Steets schemes, and evaluation shows they have significantly changed residents perceptions of road safety.
In one area there was a 67% reduction in those who felt the road area was unsafe for children, and in another there was a 55% reduction.

Why would a caravanner require to manoeuvre in a residential street with no off road parking?

Sustrans appear to be counting perception rather than casualties, what is the real promlem in these areas? As soon as the first casualty occurs, the perception will be that the road is dangerous, you cannot seperate perception and reality!
