The Road Safety GB Academy (The Academy) has been awarded a contract to deliver its Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course to TfL (Transport for London).

The contract is to deliver six of the four-day Foundation Courses during the period March – December 2014.

The Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course delivers the basic skills, knowledge, and understanding required to deliver a road safety intervention.

The course, which was developed during 2013 by The Academy in partnership with Ian Edwards, provides participants with an overview of the whole process from identifying a road safety issue, to developing an intervention and through to evaluation.

The course comprises four days of tailored face-to-face learning delivered in two, two-day sessions. Between these sessions participants are required to complete an assignment relating to the topic covered in the initial session. A final assignment, which forms the final assessment, has to be completed four weeks after the second session.

Cheryl Evans, head of training at The Academy, said: “We are naturally delighted to have been awarded this contract by TfL – it represents an important landmark for the course itself and The Academy.

“We successfully piloted the campaign and evaluation showed it to be highly effective and suitable for a wide range of road safety professionals.

“We have four courses already scheduled across the UK for 2014, so with the six we are now going to be delivering for TfL, the total number of courses to be held in 2014 is now 10.”

Ben Johnson, TfL’s senior delivery planning manager road safety, said: “As part of the Mayor’s Road Safety Action Plan we are committed to providing London boroughs with the skills needed to deliver new and better campaigns, with a particular focus on boroughs with high numbers of pedestrian, cycle and motorcycle casualties.

“The Academy will be tailoring its professional development course to specifically suit the needs and challenges in London. Through this, we will help boroughs to deliver more and better local road safety campaigns, education and training, supported by a stronger evidence base and evaluation.”
