Road safety stakeholders from across the globe, including the former UK road safety minister Andrew Jones, have paid tribute to HRH Prince Michael of Kent’s contribution to road safety as the awards scheme which bears his name celebrates an important milestone.
Each year the ‘most outstanding’ international road safety initiatives receive public recognition through the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards (PMIRSA), which have been running since 1987.
The winners are invited to an annual awards’ luncheon held at The Savoy in London, which this year takes place on 12 December.
In a video published on 6 November to celebrate 30 years of the awards’ scheme, Andrew Jones MP praised the long-term commitment of Prince Michael.
Mr Jones said: “It [the awards scheme] has certainly brought the agenda further up the profile of legislators around the world, and has made a difference.”
Barry Sheerman MP, chair of PACTS, describes the awards as ‘very important’.
Mr Sheerman said: “He [Prince Michael] has taken a wonderful campaign, and raised it to a global level.
“Prince Michael is well known and trusted because he’s stayed with it. Some notable figures come into an area, do it for a year or two and move on.
“Prince Michael has stayed with this road safety campaign valiantly and passionately for a long time.”
Others to feature in the film include: Michelle Yeoh from the United Nations Development Programme; Iain Cameron, chair of the International Transport Forum; and David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP.
Speaking in the video, Prince Michael says: “The great thing about this awards scheme is that from year to year it draws together more and more people of very high quality from around the world.
“The schemes they have submitted, the thinking that has going into it, is really admirable. It’s bringing together a lot of people who are applying their minds to try and make roads safer.”
