Wakefield SCP studies for 12th degree

A school crossing patrol from Wakefield in West Yorkshire has made the national news for his remarkable academic prowess (BBC News & The Sun).

Bruce Berry, who graduated with his first degree from Manchester University in 1963, now has 11 degrees and is currently studying for his second PhD.

Bruce became a Doctor of Philosophy with a thesis on the Russian-born writer Andrei Makine. As well as his PhD, Bruce has three BAs, seven MAs and is
fluent in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian.

Talking about his remarkable academic achievements, 70-year-old Bruce said: "I like to keep an open mind – anything which catches my interest, I go for it."

Bruce retired from his job with the Post Office in 2002 to spend more time on his studies. He works as a school crossing patrol at Crofton Junior School to pay for his tuition fees.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, he said: “I love working for degrees but wanted to do something for the community. It’s nice to get kiddies to and from school safely.”
