Walking bus scheme expands

More than 20 permanent ‘bus stops’ have been installed to mark new pick-up stops for Medway’s walking bus scheme.

Now in its ninth year, Medway’s walking bus is a well-established, award winning service that continues to grow in size and popularity.

Launched in 2003 with just 10 passengers, the scheme now boasts close to 900 passengers across 45 walking routes. It is hoped that the 22 new stops will encourage even more children to use the service.

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for front line services, said: “The walking bus in Medway is a popular and safe choice for children journeying to and from school and I hope these new permanent stops will raise awareness of the scheme and help to increase the number of children using it.

“The walking bus aims to reduce congestion on our roads, improve the health of the participants, improve air quality and improve the road safety skills of children travelling to or from their school or after school club.”
