‘Seatbelt sergeants’ sworn in

15.10 | 9 April 2009 |

As part of a DfT funded campaign, children in Years 3 and 4 in Luton, Central Beds and Bedford are being challenged to change the attitudes of parents to seat belt wearing.

The area’s Casualty Reduction Partnership has developed the seat belt awareness campaign using the theme ‘belt up for life’.

Gillian Parker, Bedfordshire’s chief constable, is heading up the ‘Seatbelt Sergeant’ initiative, under which children in these age groups are being sworn in as ‘seat belt sergeants’, and given their own certificate and warrant card.

Over the next six months, all children in these year groups will be sworn in, and the campaign will become a regular part of the partnership’s ETP activity going forward.
