After just over a year in post, Lilian Greenwood MP has been moved from future of roads minister at the DfT.
In a Facebook post, Ms Greenwood confirmed her move from the DfT to the Whips’ office, where she will serve as Vice-Chamberlain of HM Household (Government whip).
In the post, the MP for Nottingham South said that she was “proud of the work” she had done as roads minister.
This has included a significant increase in funding to repair roads and fill potholes during 2025/26 – as well as working on the highly-anticipated Road Safety Strategy, due for publication later this year.
In November 2024, Ms Greenwood became the first minister to deliver an in-person presentation at the National Road Safety Conference, organised by Road Safety GB.
Her departure opens the door for the arrival of Keir Mather to the DfT.
Mr Mather was elected MP for Selby in July 2024, serving as assistant whip at the House of Commons until now.
It has yet to be formally confirmed that Mr Mather will assume the future of roads portfolio, which alongside road safety, includes responsibility for National Highways, the Road Investment Strategy (RIS), local roads and roads maintenance and the motoring agencies (DVLA, DVSA, VCA).
However, speaking on X, he said it was a “privilege” to be joining the DfT.
I see Lilian is back part-time at DfT with a brief for Local Transport and Road Safety so here’s hoping that the new Road Safety Strategy will be published soon.
