Commuters across the country are being encouraged to take to two wheels today as part of 2015 Cycle to Work Day (3 September).
Supported by British Cycling, Sustrans, The London Cycling Campaign, Cyclescheme, the Bicycle Association and the CTC, Cycle to Work Day aims to encourage people to take to two wheels and cycle to work for just one day.
The campaign website says the number of people cycling to work regularly is growing, with an estimated 760,000 people in the UK currently doing so. The campaign aims to increase this to one million by 2021.
The event website includes a pledge to support the campaign which has been signed by more than 30,200 cyclists, 837 employers and 459 cycle retailers.
In Southend-on-Sea, prizes are being offered to local businesses to help them encourage their employees to cycle to work, and free bike health checks and competitively priced bike hire are also available.
Commuters from across London are invited to Spitalfields Market for a free breakfast and bike health check, and free bacon butties and a bike check are on offer at Cambourne Park on the outskirts of Cambridge.
Gary Shipp, from Sustrans said: “Cycling to work is a great way to start the day; not only is riding a bike cheaper than running a car but it’s also great for your health and helps to reduce congestion on gridlocked roads.
“Currently around 3% of people cycle to work. Thanks to initiatives like Cycle to Work Day, more and more people are choosing to change the way they commute and start cycling.”
