Leaked documents suggest the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is looking at plans to close test centres and use private firms as ‘delegated examiners’, according to Sky News.
Under the new plans examiners could be based at supermarkets and community centres.
The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) says it has seen leaked documents showing that the DSA is looking at ways to reduce its costs.
It is also exploring whether driving tests could be conducted by other organisations inside or outside the public sector, according to the PCS.
Mark Serwotka, general secretary of PCS, said: "These new documents shed more light on the plans being hatched behind closed doors by senior managers and ministers.
"Worryingly, it is the latest evidence of the creeping privatisation of the agency’s work, which puts ideology before road safety."
A DfT spokesperson said: “We have said many times that we are looking at how we can improve the driver testing and training process.
“However, no decisions have been taken on future testing provision and we will not comment on leaked documents.”

Reads to me like a red herring.
All authority does it, changes have to be made and several leaked documents make us believe what may happen. This keeps our minds away from the actuality of the situation and when that happens we all breath a sigh of relief that the leak didn’t come to fruition.
So I suggest we pay no heed to this. I have read elsewhere another leak that says we are doing something else.
