With around 135,000 free copies of the new Good Egg Guide for Parents of New Drivers already allocated to Road Safety GB members, the deadline for applying for free copies has been further extended until 5 April (5.00pm).

The guide, which is endorsed by Road Safety GB, is the latest addition to the award-winning Good Egg series. It covers all aspects of a new driver’s experience from choosing an instructor and learning to drive safely to the driving test and the law.

Thanks to the generous support of the Arnold Clark Group and The Co-operative Insurance, the guides are being made available to all Road Safety GB members at no cost. Road Safety GB members who have not registered for their allocation can do so at: www.parentsofnewdrivers.com

The ‘Parents of New Drivers’ guide has been developed over a six-month period in consultation with key partners including Road Safety GB, ACPO/S, advanced driving instructors and a number of leading academics and transport psychologists.

Emeritus professor Stephen Stradling, of Edinburgh Napier University’s Transport Research Institute, said: "This excellent publication will give parents the wherewithal to guide their children through the dangers during their fraught transition from anxious youngster to a safe and careful driver."

Dr Neale Kinnear, TRL (Transport Research Laboratory), said: "It is clear that youth and driving inexperience is a combination that results in a heightened risk of being involved in a crash.

“Parents should be aware of the nature of this risk and what they can do to reduce it. Learning to drive does not end with passing the driving test. That is really only the beginning. This guide summarises key messages from the road safety community and scientific literature to help parents become more informed when deciding how they can help their child learn to drive."

Dr Sarah J Jones, honorary senior lecturer at Cardiff University and consultant in environmental health protection, said: "The risks to newly qualified young drivers are stark and clear, but are easily forgotten at such an exciting time.

“Congratulations to the Good Egg Safety team for producing such a useful and comprehensive guide that should remind young people, their friends and their families that the big adventure that is passing a driving test can be undertaken safely."

For more information about the guide and/or to register for an allocation of free copies visit: www.parentsofnewdrivers.com by 5pm Thursday 5 April or contact the Good Egg Guide team on 0131 668 1880.

Yet again The Good Egg Guide has produced a comprehensive guide for a further vulnerable road user group. The guide tells it like it is with facts and figures. The section on buying a first car has some great tips and I learnt new things too. The Parent Pact, Graduated Driver Licensing and the Road Traffic (New Driver) Act 1997 are all things I was not aware of. A must read for parents of pre-drivers and new drivers. Well done to all involved.
