A new campaign is reminding young drivers in Walsall of the potentially catastrophic consequences of inappropriate driving behaviour.
The campaign was launched by road safety officers at Walsall Council on Valentine’s Day.
In keeping with that theme, 119 red roses were displayed at the Wisemore campus of Walsall College.
Each rose represented a person, aged 17-24 years, who was killed or seriously injured in the West Midlands over the last 12 months while either the driver or passenger in a vehicle.
Students were also offered the chance to use a road safety driving simulator, which looks at the effects of distractions on their driving and the impact of driving whilst under an influence.
Cllr Adrian Andrew, portfolio holder with responsibility for regeneration and transportation, said: “This campaign identifies the terrible consequences for both drivers and passengers when things go wrong.
“The display of roses, representing the tragic loss of life through dangerous driving, has captured the attention of students at Walsall College.
“This provided an opportunity for our road safety officers to have many engaging discussions with young people today to encourage better driver and pedestrian behaviour and road safety.”
