Dr Sam Chapman will discuss safe speeds and older demographics during a presentation to be delivered at Road Safety GB’s Mature Drivers’ Conference in the spring.
Hosted by Road Safety GB, with support from GEM Motoring Assist, The Road Safety Trust and Waymo, the Mature Drivers’ Conference will be held at Austin Court, Birmingham, on 28 April 2026.
The conference, titled Safe System Thinking for Mature Road Users, will consider mature road users in the context of the Safe System. Alternatives to, and retiring from, driving will also be discussed.
The delegate fees are £195 for Road Safety GB members and £245 for non-members (both plus VAT).

Sam Chapman, CEO and Co-founder of The Floow, will argue that understanding how speed influences crash likelihood and injury severity is central to the Safe System approach, and nowhere is this more critical than for older demographics.
His talk will present new behavioural evidence showing how driving characteristics change with age and how speed shapes risk outcomes. He will draw on findings from multiple research programmes, including Fit2Drive (funded by The Road Safety Trust) and the PHOEBE project, to provide insights into measured adaptive driving behaviours, reaction-time and cognitive changes, and speed propensity across differing road environments.
He will conclude that, taken together, these evidence strands highlight the need for effective safe-speed management while recognising the unique vulnerabilities of older road users.
