The 2018 John Smart Road Safety Award was presented to DriveStart
Road safety teams are being encouraged to enter the CIHT Awards 2019, with a new category launched to recognise schemes that improve walking and cycling.
The CIHT Awards celebrate and reward the ‘remarkable achievements’ of those working in the transportation sector and ‘promote the professionalism and innovative projects as best practice’ to a wider industry audience.
The 2019 awards ceremony takes place on 13 June at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
One award presented on the night is the John Smart Road Safety Award, awarded in recognition of the CIHT’s former director of technical affairs, who passed away suddenly in 2012.
The John Smart award recognises ‘outstanding achievements’ which improve road user safety through excellent practice, design and technical application.
In 2018, the award was presented to DriveStart – a young driver intervention delivered by Agilysis on behalf of Safer Roads Berkshire.
For 2019, CIHT has launched five new awards to highlight the evolution of the highways and transportation sector.
One of these is the CIHT Walking and Cycling Award, which aims to ‘recognise the contribution of active travel to social, economic and environmental sustainability’.
According to CIHT, entries ‘must focus on improving walking and cycling’ and ‘recognise how outstanding design and implementation of schemes in our towns and cities improve the places around them’.
