A one-day conference taking place in London next month will be the first UK event to focus exclusively on preventing suicides on the UK road network.
Organised by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), the conference aims to lift the lid on a problem which PACTS says is ‘much bigger than recognised’, and which has ‘significant consequences for the highways sector’.
The event, which takes place in Westminster on 19 October, will also look at how suicides are recorded, and prevention strategies.
Speakers will comprise senior figures from highways, transport, police, judiciary, mental health and voluntary sectors, including: Ruth Sutherland, chief executive of Samaritans; His Honour Judge Mark Lucraft QC, chief coroner of England and Wales; and Tim Holland, suicide prevention policy lead at Highways England.
Conference themes include:
- National government policy on suicide prevention
- The experience of the rail sector in preventing suicides
- Links between the ‘safe system’ approach to road safety and suicide prevention
- Sources of data looking at suicides on the roads, and how these can be improved
- Policy and institutional barriers to action
- Interventions to reduce suicides on the roads
Delegates will also hear the results of ‘pioneering research’ into the scale of suicides and attempts on UK roads.
