Surrey Road Safe and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership are collaborating with Mental Health Motorbike on a new campaign.

The Mental Health Biker Awareness campaign, which runs from 14-25 October aims to address both the safety and mental health challenges faced by bikers as the motorcycle season draws to a close.

As autumn progresses and temperatures drop, many motorcyclists find themselves putting away their bikes until spring. This transition period can often lead to feelings of isolation and a decrease in physical activity, potentially impacting mental health and safety awareness.

The campaign seeks to provide strategies and support to help bikers maintain their mental wellbeing and safety consciousness during the offseason.

PC Steve Bucksey, motorcycle casualty reduction officer, for Surrey & Sussex Police, said: “Our partnership with Mental Health Motorbike allows us to highlight the important connection between rider safety and mental wellbeing. By combining our expertise, we can offer comprehensive support to riders during a time when they might feel disconnected from their passion.”

Paul Oxborough, founder of Mental Health Motorbike, said: “Poor mental health does not discriminate against who it affects, so it is essential we work together to break the stigma around talking about it.

“This collaboration enhances our ability to reach and support bikers. By integrating safety considerations with mental health strategies, we’re providing a holistic approach to rider wellbeing.”

The campaign focuses on several key areas:

  • Staying Connected: Encouraging bikers to maintain relationships with fellow riders through online forums, social media groups, and safe, local meetups.
  • Keeping Active: Promoting alternative physical activities and suggesting ways to incorporate motorcycle maintenance as a form of exercise, while emphasising workshop safety.
  • Continuous Learning: Offering resources for advanced rider training, motorcycle theory, and winter road safety to keep minds engaged during the off-season.
  • Mental Health check-ins: Providing tools and resources for self-assessment and peer support, emphasising the importance of mental health in overall rider safety.
  • Planning for the Future: Inspiring riders to set goals and plan trips for the upcoming riding season, fostering a sense of anticipation and purpose while considering safety preparations.

Throughout the two-week campaign, the partnerships will post a series of tips and graphics on their social media channels all with a focus on both mental health and safety.

Mental Health Motorbike’s peer support group, accessible 24/7 and moderated by trained mental health first aiders, will be highlighted as a valuable resource for those seeking support.
